Fighting Crime in Brick City

Under the leadership of Mayor Cory Booker and Police Director Garry McCarthy, the City of Newark has launched a range of new projects to improve public safety, adopting the data-driven approach that has proven successful in New York and other cities.

Bennett Midland has supported this work with in-depth studies of criminal justice system business processes, original research about outcomes, and the development of new programs and initiatives. For example, our team designed and executed a study that analyzed the outcomes for gun possession arrests as they progress through the criminal justice system, from arraignment to disposition. The study revealed, among other things, that the large majority of people charged with gun possession in Newark have an arrest history (some quite extensive), yet many convictions for gun possession result in sentences of probation only, rather than incarceration. Bennett Midland’s analysis galvanized criminal justice system leaders, who examined arrest and court processes and collaborated to identify appropriate policy responses.
